AZIENDA SANTA LUCIA – A STORY OF MORE THAN 100 YEARS!
WINE IS ART IN THE BOTTLE!
Our winery, Santa Lucia, is a family business set in the heart of the Park of Maremma, a natural park commonly referred to as “Parco dell’Uccellina”, last great wilderness of Tuscany. An unspoilt place of southern Tuscany, at close range from the wonderful sea of Talamone and set among the enchanting vineyards of the Morellino di Scansano.
We produce high quality wines for many generations, as a family-owned Winery and Vineyards; Our focus is hand crafting wines from our 40Ha property located in Maremma Tuscana. Our Sangiovese, Vermentino, Ansonica, Alicante, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petitot Verdot, Viognier and Ciliegiolo grapes sourced from our vineyards. The history of winemaking in our family dates to 1898, when the great grandfather (Giuseppe) began working in the vineyards in the Monte Argentario, a small Italian village on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The declared founder was Luciano, the father of the currently owners, the brothers Lorenzo and Luca. While his grandmother Lucia all along supported him tending the vineyards Luciano, began making wine for family and friends. Named for the great grandmother Lucia, Luciano assumed control of our family business in 1980 – these were the humble beginnings of the Scotto family wine history and he dedicated the name of the company at Lucia “Santa Lucia”, because she supported him hardly.
Since 1980 step by step the winery has grown and has continued to grow thanks to the passion and love for wine and Maremma transmitted by Luciano to his 2 sons, Lorenzo the winemaker and Luca the marketing and sales director. The most widely planted varieties in the Santa Lucia appellation are Sangiovese, Vermentino, Ansonica, Alicante, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Viognier and Ciliegiolo.
THE HARVEST LIKE ONCE
The company’s yearly production is equal to 220.000 bottles of wine. Our winetards, which cover an area of almost 40 hectares, are all located in the municipality of Magliano in Toscana, Orbetello and Monte Argentario. The wines grow on these lands of different and opposite geological origins, which create ideal conditions for rainwater to drain, roots to breathe and plants to make the most of the minerals in the various layers of soil. Sangiovese is a variety that fascinates us and that we grow the most in our vineyards. The other native grapes that we have chosen to perfect the character of our wines are Alicante, and Vermentino, Ansonica and Viognier for white wines. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Ciliegiolo complete the range of grapes we use in our wines.
The wine training methods we employ are the spurred cordon and the high cordon. Our largest vineyard is situated right next to the Cantina Santa Lucia wine cellars, close to Magliano in Toscana. Here grow the well-known Morellino “Tore del Moro” di Scansano DOCG. In the other largest wineyard close to the coast we produced our Vermentino DOC “Brigante”, the most appreciate vermentino of the common. Our oldest vineyard is situated in Monte Argentario, 300 m above sea level. The varietal grown here is Ansonica. Wine is made from grapes grown in terrace or steep slopes vineyards with a slope than 26%. Ansonica is quite know in our common; we are one of the four family companies who still produce Ansonica; characteristic are that it grows in the cost of the sea, pale yellow and aftertaste is slightly bitter.
